EA Forum Bans Equal Game Bans

Ouch. From Blue’s News:
A post on the EA Support Forums from APOC, online community manager for Electronic Arts, outlines a new policy for their new forums, saying users who earn a ban based on their behavior in the forums will be locked out of all of the EA games tied to that account. Word is:
Well, its actually going to be a bit nastier for those who get banned.

Your forum account will be directly tied to your Master EA Account, so if we ban you on the forums, you would be banned from the game as well since the login process is the same. And you’d actually be banned from your other EA games as well since its all tied to your account. So if you have SPORE and Red Alert 3 and you get yourself banned on our forums or in-game, well, your SPORE account would be banned to. It’s all one in the same, so I strongly reccommend people play nice and act mature.

All in all, we expect people to come on here and abide by our ToS. We hate banning people, it makes our lives a lot tougher, but its what we have to do.

Those banned will stay banned, but like most other internet services, its not that hard to create a new fake e-mail account. However, its a lot harder to get a new serial key =)

Avatars should be back within 2 weeks of the launch.

Spore Sells Nearly 2 Million Copies

Spore Sells Nearly 2 Million Copies @ Shacknews:

Second quarter earnings for its fiscal ‘09 year were up more than 39% compared to the same period last year, Electronic Arts annnounced today.

Led by Madden NFL 09 sales of 4.5 million units, nearly 2 million copies of Spore and 1.2 million copies of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, EA’s net revenues ended up at $894 million. That was not enough to put the quarter in the black, as the company’s net loss ended up at $310 million. That compares to revenues of $640 million and a $195 million net loss during the second quarter of fiscal 2008.

The Xbox 360 remains the most important platform for EA, as Microsoft’s console generated 25% ($224 million) of the company’s revenues in the quarter, which ended September 30. After that, the PlayStation 3 accounted for $98 million, the PC $88 million, PlayStation 2 $55 million and the Wii $33 million.

To improve financials and weather current economic conditions, Electronic Arts is starting a cost reduction plan, which includes letting go of 6% of its workforce. Through the plan, EA hopes to save $50 million a year pre-taxes.

Interview with Cyril Saint Girons

The Spore Community Page notes an interview with Cyril Saint Girons, where the Audio engineer discusses his experiences designing and creating the music in Spore.

When did you start working on the audio for Spore?

I started working on the audio for Spore as an engineer in January 2007. Before that I was developing the tool the Spore ended up using for its procedural audio in the R & D group at EA Redwood Shores.

Will Wright on DRM

Posted by Jube on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 2:24 pm.

At the Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Awards Will Wright commented on the Spore DRM situation. You can read more at Kotaku.

“It was something I probably should have tuned into more. It was a corporate decision to go with DRM on Spore. They had a plan and the parameters, but now we’re allowing more authentications and working with players to de-authenticate which makes it more in line like an iTunes. I think one of the most valid concerns about it was you could only install it so many times. For most players it’s not an issue, it’s a pretty small percentage, but some people do like wiping their hard disk and installing it 20 times or they want to play it 10 years later.”

“I think it’s an interim solution to an interim problem. You have games like Battlefield Heroes coming out where the idea is you give away the game and sell upgrades, which works more in the Asian markets where you need to monetize it over the Internet. I think we’re in this uncomfortable spot in going from what’s primarily a brink and motor shrink-wrapped product to what eventually will become more of an online monetization model.”
